Which types of exercise are generally safe for people with Marfan syndrome?
Physical activity can support general health, and many people with Marfan syndrome can exercise. However, the type and intensity of activity matter because some exercises can put excessive strain on the aorta. For some people, moderate activities such as walking, gentle cycling, or relaxed recreational swimming may be suitable. A comfortable pace that allows someone to talk while exercising may be more appropriate than pushing to their limits.
Heavy weightlifting, intense competitive sports, and exercises that involve straining or holding the breath can cause sudden increases in blood pressure. This may place extra stress on the aortic wall. Contact sports may also carry a risk of a blow or injury. These are general considerations, not a personal exercise prescription. What is suitable depends on a person’s aortic measurements, heart health, age, and treatment plan.
Before starting a new sport, joining a gym, or significantly changing an exercise routine, ask a cardiologist for advice. The doctor can explain which activities are appropriate and whether any restrictions are needed. Stop exercising and seek emergency medical care if sudden, severe chest, back, or abdominal pain occurs.
