Carriers are people who have a change in one copy of a gene for a condition, but don’t have the condition themselves. This happens with recessive conditions, where you need a gene change in both copies of a gene (one from each parent) to actually be affected. A carrier has one normal copy and one changed copy: the normal copy is enough to keep them healthy, so they usually show no symptoms and often don’t know they’re a carrier at all.
