If someone with Li-Fraumeni syndrome develops cancer, is treatment different, and what is the long-term outlook?
Most cancers in people with Li-Fraumeni syndrome are treated in the standard way for that cancer type. The difference is that doctors also try to lower the chance of a new cancer in the future. Knowing the diagnosis before treatment starts helps the care team make these choices.
–Radiation is avoided where possible
–Breast cancer surgery
–Chemotherapy
–Fewer radiation-based scans
Some steps can also lower risk before cancer develops:
–Risk-reducing breast surgery
–Colonoscopy
–Healthy habits
-Avoid tobacco in all forms, limit alcohol, protect the skin from strong sun, and reduce contact with workplace chemicals known to cause cancer. The effects of these exposures may add to the genetic risk.
Li-Fraumeni syndrome is a lifelong condition with a high cancer risk, and it would be wrong to suggest otherwise. But the outlook has changed. With early diagnosis, regular screening, and careful treatment choices, many cancers are now found early and treated successfully, and many people with Li-Fraumeni syndrome go on to study, work, raise families, and live full lives.
