What should I expect if I’m having a child with Down Syndrome
Babies born with Down syndrome usually undergo a few routine checks in the first days and weeks:
*Heart evaluation (echocardiogram)
*Hearing check
*Thyroid function test
*Check for any digestive tract differences
*A blood test to confirm the diagnosis genetically
Many babies have low muscle tone (hypotonia), which can make feeding slower at first. Lactation support and early physiotherapy referrals help significantly here.
Children with Down syndrome benefit from regular, coordinated check-ups rather than one-off treatment:
*Annual thyroid checks
*Regular vision and hearing checks
*Early speech, occupational, and physical therapy
*Monitoring for sleep apnea and, less commonly, celiac disease
Every child with Down syndrome develops differently. Intellectual disability is usually mild to moderate, and with early intervention, many children go on to attend inclusive schools, build strong communication skills, and live independent, fulfilling lives as adults.
